"Taiga Full of Cedar Nuts"[2] is a Tuvan folk song that was the national anthem of Tuva under many regimes. At first, when this song was adopted, Tuva was an independent country that was recognized only by the Soviet Union and Mongolia in the 1920s.[3][4] Later, the Soviets annexed the territory in the 1940s and the Tuvan Autonomous Oblast was established; later in 1961, they were upgraded to become the Tuvan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.[5] This anthem remained in use until even after the USSR's demise, after which the territory later became a federal subject of Russia and governed by the Great Khural.[6] On 11 August 2011, it was replaced by a new anthem called "Men – Tyva Men".[1][7][8]

This anthem is unique in the sense that, unlike most national anthems – rather then expressing the people's pride in their homeland, culture and/or political ideology – "Tooruktug Taiga" expresses the Tuvan belief that one who takes care of their environment and livestock will be fully gratified.[9]

The song is performed with traditional musical instruments, played and sung at a slow pace, and involves Tuvan throat singing.

Trivia[]

  • It is similar to Lesotho's old anthem, as it contained modest lyrics, expressing the people's satisfaction for the country's abundant cattle and nature over nationalistic pride.
