The East Is Red -1950-

"The East is Red" is a Chinese revolutionary song. It was the de facto national anthem of the People's Republic of China during the Cultural Revolution. It was written in 1943 by a farmer named Li Youyuan, and the music is based on a love song from Shaanxi's Loess Plateau called "Bai Ma Diao" (zh.

It was adopted unofficially in 1966 during the Cultural Revolution. The song, however, was barely known about until after Deng Xiaoping's prominence in the late 1970s. Its official use has largely been replaced by the current national anthem, "March of the Volunteers".[10]In fact, this music was most used as the chime music of tower clocks in china.[11]

Lyrics[]

Due to its popularity, the song has been translated into several languages, including those outside the People's Republic of China.

Here in the East, rises a sun
China has brought forth a Mao Zedong
For the people standing as he was
hu'er hai you, he's the people's liberation

Chairman Mao loves the people
Chairman Mao, he is our guide…
… to build a New China!
hu'er hai you, he leads us — leads us forward!

The Communist Party is like the sun…
It brings a great revolution!
Where there is a Communist Party…
hu'er hai you, there the people are liberated![13]
