"The Youth March", originally known as "The Student March" and later known as "Call to the Citizens", was the national anthem of the former State of Vietnam from 1948 to 1955 when it was part of the French Union, and then South Vietnam from 1955 to 1975 when the Vietnam War ended.[1][2]
It was written and composed by Mai Văn Bộ and Lưu Hữu Phước, respectively, in 1939.[1]
The anthem was replaced with the PRG anthem "Giải phóng miền Nam". During the reunification process, today's "Tiến Quân Ca" became the official anthem when South Vietnam was annexed by North Vietnam.[1]
This song, however, is still used by mainly South Vietnamese expatriates living in the United States and other countries after fleeing the war, thus is sometimes colloquially referred to as the "Anthem of Free Vietnam".[1]
