- This is not the legitimate national anthem of Kazakhstan. For the real one, see Menıñ Qazaqstanym.
"O Kazakhstan" is a parody anthem of Kazakhstan made for the 2006 mockumentary film Borat, starring English actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen who played the role of fictional journalist Borat Sagdiyev. The music was composed by the actor's older brother Erran Baron Cohen.
The film is deemed highly offensive to the majority of the citizens of Kazakhstan. Sacha Baron Cohen has been threatened with lawsuits by the Government of Kazakstan after the execution of the film.[1] In December 2007, Baron Cohen announced to retire the titular character Borat,[2] but that came out of hiatus in 2018 when the character reappeared in American talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2018. The character starred again in the 2020 sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, for which he won another Golden Globe Award. Not long after, he announced to retire the satire character again, citing personal safety reasons.
Playback incidents[]
Twice, at special events when executing "Menıñ Qazaqstanym" ("My Kazakhstan"), incorrect soundtracks have been played due to human error.
In March 2012, the full Borat soundtrack was played at the International Shooting Grand Prix in Kuwait with Gold-winner Mariya Dmitriyenko standing in shock as she listened to the entire duration of "O Kazakhstan" instead of "My Kazakhstan".[3][4] Kazakh officials were enraged by this incident and complained. A few weeks earlier, a similar incident happened at a festival of a ski resort in Qostanai, where the first bar of Ricky Martin's 1999 single "Livin' La Vida Loca" was accidentally played before it was immediately changed to the official anthem.[5] (Ricky Martin also happens to be the same age as Sacha Baron Cohen, both born in 1971 only a couple months apart.)

The lyrics are intended to be in broken English. It is sung in Borat's accent.
