"Onward, Banner of Glory" is a Slovenian patriotic song. It was used as the national anthem of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, a federal republic of Yugoslavia. Originally a patriotic poem written by Simon Jenko in 1860, it tells about a boy defending his homeland. It was then set to music by his cousin Davorin Jenko. Later that year, it was publicly performed for the first time and was published in a magazine called Slovenski glasnik. It was the first Slovene literature translated into English.
The anthem was used by the Slovenes of the former SFR Yugoslavia. Shortly before independence, "Naprej, zastava slave" was replaced with "Zdravljica", now the national anthem of Slovenia. Today, "Naprej, zastava slave" is used by the President of Slovenia, and following a 1995 government decree, it is also used by the Slovenian Armed Forces.
