"Maryland, My Maryland" was the state song of Maryland from 1939 to 2021, when it was removed due to the controversy behind its lyrics. The song's melody is based on an old German Christmas song "O Tannenbaum" from centuries earlier. The lyrics disparaged the then-president, and several attempts have been made to replace this song with a better one or get rid of it entirely. In May 2021, governor Larry Hogan signed the bill to get rid of this song, and was successful. The state is now left without an anthem.

Lyrics[]

The lyrics of the song were written in 1861 by James Ryder Randall, who supported the Confederate States and opposed Abraham Lincoln during the Baltimore riot of the civil war. The lyrics were made to disparage the them-president, and has since become a controversial topic.
