"The Legend of Piave" is an Italian patriotic song written by E.A. Mario in June 1918 during the Second Battle of the Piave River; he will later write the music as well.

History[]

It is commonly believed to have been picked by Crown Prince (later King) Umberto of Savoy as provisional anthem after september 1943 until the liberation of Rome in 1944, as substitute of the "Marcia Reale" as the Italian national anthem.[1][2] This has yet to be backed by proper sources, the "Marcia Reale" kept its status as National anthem (with "Cunservet Deus su Re" as Royal anthem), though this didn't blocked the Italian Senate to cite it as "historical national anthem"

The song still remains popular to this day, due to its strong connection with the battle of the Piave and WW1 in general. It is performed in the Italian dub of the Movie "The Red Tent" when the crew of airship Italia is noticed of having reached the North Pole.

The lyrics are still copyrighted since the author died in 1961.[3]
