The "Pontifical Anthem and March" is the national anthem of Vatican City and the Holy See to mark the presence of the Pope or His nuncio. This song has been around since the 19th century; the melody was composed by Charles Gounod in 1869, but it wasn't adopted until 1949, and the lyrics weren't written until 1991 by Raffaello Lavagna. When the flag is raised during ceremonies, only the first eight bars are played.[1][2]
