"I ❤ NY" is the state song of the U.S. state of New York. The phrase "I Love New York" is also a popular marketing logo popularized in 1977 by Mary Wells Laurence, who founded the Wells, Rich, Greene advertizing agency. Designed by graphic designer Milton Glaser, this trademarked symbol is owned by the ESD. On the same year, American jingle musician Steve Karmen wrote and composed a song for the slogan, which then became the official state song. Karmen gave the rights to the song to the state for free.[1]
The original author wrote a new verse for the song in 2020 during the acme of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City to emphasize the city's resilience;[2] however, it was never commercially recorded nor used.
