"God Save the Tsar!" was the national anthem of the Russian Empire before the aftermath and success of the Bolshevik Revolution. Chosen from a 1833 competition, it was first performed on 18 December of that year. It was composed by violinist Alexei Lvov, and the lyrics were written by Vasily Zhukovsky. During the Russian Revolution in 1917, "God Save the Tsar" was replaced by "Worker's Marseillaise".[1][2][3][4]

Legacy[]
The tune of "God Save the Tsar!" has been used for songs of several American institutions (colleges, universities, high schools) including "Hail, Pennsylvania!" for the alma mater of University of Pennsylvania,[5] "Doxology" of Phi Gamma Delta (ΦΓΔ), "Noble Fraternity" of Phi Kappa Psi (ΦΚΨ), "Dear Old Macalester" for Macalester College,[6] "Hail, Delta Upsilon", "Raise Now to Westover" at Westover School, and many others. The tune is also used for "Firm Bound in Brotherhood" dedicated to the Boy Scouts honor society Order of the Arrow headquartered in Texas.[7] In the Philippines, the "UST High School Hymn" uses this anthem's tune for the University of Santo Tomas High School in Manila.[8]
