Korean is a language spoken by about 80 million people on the Korean Peninsula. Following the aftermath of the Korean War, both South Korea and North Korea have established standardized norms for Korean, and political conflicts between the two countries have highlighted the differences between them.
Beyond Korea, the language is recognised as a minority language in northeastern China, parts of Russia and parts of Central Asia. It is also spoken by the Korean diaspora in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. The linguistic homeland of Korean is suggested to be somewhere in contemporary Manchuria.
