Japan (日本) is a country in East Asia full of modern and traditional elements. Japanese music includes a wide array of distinct genres. Japanese music is the world's largest market for music on physical media, and the second-largest overall music market.

Although modern Japanese music is popular, its older songs are not forgotten either. The national anthem, which is the shortest in the world by length, is derived from a waka poem dated from the Heian era, between the 8th and 12th centuries.

Japanese perfectures have their own regional anthems. March songs (軍歌 gunka) were common in the Empire of Japan during World War I and World War II.
