The Germanic languages are a group of Indo-European languages that descend from Proto-Germanic, which was first spoken in Scandinavia during the Iron Age. They were also once spoken by the Goths and the Vikings, who have invaded many parts of Europe. Today, the Germanic languages are spoken by around 515 million people as a first language, mainly in Northwestern Europe.

English is the most spoken Germanic language, with 360–400 million native speakers—many of whom are not of Germanic descent. It is the lingua franca of the world, spoken almost everywhere on the planet.
