France is a transcontinental country with its mainland in Western Europe, and several territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The French Republic is split into 18 administrative regions. There used to be 27 regions, but in 2016, some regions merged with other regions. These regions are a kind of local government. 13 regions are in the mainland, known as Metropolitan France (la Métropole), and 5 are overseas departments.
Although all these regions' official national anthem is "The Marseillaise", they may have unofficial anthems of their own.
There are different ethnic groups living in the country. They have their own cultural and linguistic roots. These include the Occitans, Catalans, Alsatians, Basques, Bretons, Corsicans, and more.
