The German Democratic Republic was founded after World War II when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Soviets. The country was formed from part of the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, and it remained a satellite state of the USSR. It reunified with West Germany in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
