Chinese refers to a group of languages used by Chinese people in the Sinosphere. Main varieties include Mandarin, Cantonese, Wu and Min, which are not mutually intelligible to each other. These Chinese varieties are alternatively called the Sinitic languages, the most commonly spoken branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Approximately 1.52 billion people are speakers of the Chinese macrolanguage, of whom about 73.5% speak Mandarin. Many people think Chinese is a single language with many different dialects, all unified under one writing system (except for one).
Throughout history, Chinese languages (having evolved from Middle Chinese and Old Chinese) spread throughout China proper. Today they are widely spoken in modern China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore. They were also formerly spoken in Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. Minority communities that speak some form of Chinese can also be found in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. Overseas Chinese communities are found in many other parts of the world, notably Australia, Canada, the United States, and the Philippines.
