The State Anthem of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was the regional anthem of Moldova when it was part of the Soviet Union.[1] It was composed by Ștefan Neaga with lyrics written by Emilian Bucov and Bogdan Istru in 1945.[2]

History[]

Ștefan Neaga

Ștefan Neaga, composer of the anthem.

In 1945, Ștefan Neaga wrote the melody for the anthem, for which the poets Emil Bucov and Bogdan Istru wrote the lyrics. Thanks to this work, the composer and the writers won the first prize of a great national musical contest in the Soviet Union, where composers from Moldova and other SSRs presented their works.[3]

This anthem was highly appreciated by musicians, becoming the main song of the country spanning almost half a century. Through this musical work, Neaga became the eternal pride and joy of the Moldavian people, which lasted almost four decades.[4]

Neaga said that he wanted to represent with his work "the creativity and love of Great Stalin, the certainty of the victory of communism, and his desire to give all his forces in this unique case".[5]

Neaga was an artist who supervised under his own magnifying glass the weaknesses of his art. French poet Claude Roy said that there is a type of character in which one can see a creation as "an art to shine for yourself and for others, a little more than one can really live your life."

Mystery of the lyrics[]

A recreated version of Neaga's original composition (with the melody and lyrics) was recorded and subsequently posted on YouTube by fans in February 2016.[citation needed]

Note on orthography[]

The Cyrillic script was used officially for the Romanian language (also called Moldovan in Transnistria and by conservative regions of Moldova)[6][7] during Soviet times. However, after 1989, the Romanian language in modern-day Moldova now officially uses the Latin script; only the breakaway state of Transnistria (claimed internationally as part of Moldova) still officially uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

Original lyrics[]

These are the original lyrics which lasted from 1945 to 1980 and contained both mentions of Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin, and unlike the succeeding version, this version used refrains.

English version[]

Moldova, land of ancestral doinas abound,
Its hills and valleys where grapes and bread are found.
With the aid of Great Russia, we fight in battle,
To make thy land free, we conquer thy struggle.

Refrain:
O Soviet Moldova, blossom forevermore!
With thy sisters, we are able to grow.
And around our Soviet flag which shall soar;
Let the path be thy great gifted flow.

Lenin and Stalin with us in thy bright journey,
No more shall the barbarous boyar's bondage be!
Triumphant in battles we are led to victory,
We are led by the great Communist Party!

Refrain

Among our Army, fighting valiantly,
We shall vanquish the foes of thy country!
And of the Union in the great family,
May Soviet Moldavia live eternally!

Refrain[8]

Post-Stalinist lyrics[]

After Stalin's death in 1953, like other SSR anthems, any mentions of the former leader have been removed; however, a new version of the anthem wasn't adopted until 1980. The anthem was rewritten from the typical three verses with choruses—like other anthems of the USSR—to a three-part single verse without choruses, which had been used until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.[1]

The music composed by Ștefan Neaga was arranged by Eduard Lazarev, and the lyrics were written by Emilian Bucov and Bogdan Istru.[1]

Along with our sister republics.
Together with Great Mother Russia we march on,
Toward the Union's serene future.

As our great Party sagaciously leads us.

Brought about by our undivided people.

May travail for you be a sire great!
And communism, this goal unshaken –
You raise it through the achievements for your blessing!
